This year for us, will see an intensifying of our efforts to increase our knowledge, for the purpose of being more effective in bringing others to Christ. Therefore, for the ensuing weeks, I will use this space to share each week a common rejection of God by unbelievers, and an answer to overcome the objection. I encourage you to use this as your personal study to prepare you for future conversations.
Unbeliever: “It’s foolish to believe in things you cannot see, like this God you speak of.” Answer: Have you ever seen your thoughts? Have you ever seen gravity? Yet you would argue they both exist even though you have never seen either of them. When you see a painting, do you need to see the painter to believe that one exists? Of course not, and God is no different. You can look at nature and see there is a God. When was the last time you looked up at the stars or considered the vastness of the universe? What about your body? Have you stopped to consider how perfectly all the members of your body work together in perfect harmony? How do you think that is? Do you believe it is all because of an unexplainable cosmic cause? You choose to believe there is no God, just as you choose to believe that gravity exists. Belief is a choice and if you look at the facts concerning God, you will either choose to believe in Him, or you will choose not to. Whichever you choose is up to you, but it still doesn’t change the fact that He exists. The only way they will ever know is if we love them enough to take the time to do so. It only takes a small investment of time to change a life forever. (excerpts from One Minute Answers to Skeptics by Charlie H. Unbeliever: “I’m a good person. Surely, God is not going to send good people to hell.” Answer: How did you determine you are a good person? What makes you good in your eyes? Have you ever told a lie? Have you ever cheated, at work, on your taxes, at a game? Have you gossiped about another person? Have you ever done anything wrong or broke the law in any way? Have you ever driven faster than the speed limit? Truth is none of us can honestly say we have NEVER done any of the things called sins, which includes these few I mentioned. Actually, not one of us is good. The Bible says in Romans 3:23 that ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. It is not God’s desire to send good people to hell. The people going to hell will be unrepentant people who refuse to accept the gift of God which is the redeeming work of his son Jesus on a the cross to take away our sins. Without Jesus none of us will live with God. (excerpts from One Minute Answers to Skeptics by Charlie H. Unbeliever: “A loving God would never send people to hell”. Answer: If a judge would allow murderers, rapist, thieves and child molesters to go free, there would be a public outcry for his not carrying out proper justice. However, when it comes to a Holy and Righteous God executing right justice you complain. God does not send people to hell; he merely tells them that he no longer will pursue them in an attempt for them to love him. Therefore, the only way this is possible for him to do this, is to send them where he is not. Thus, hell becomes their destiny because God loves them enough to honor their freewill by choosing to not worship him as their God. It is a sad commentary on a life when they realize it was their choice them sent them to eternal torment. It is up to us to do all we can to rescue them from this impending fate.
