One of the beautiful pictures in scripture, occurs when God calls Israel into battle against foreign pagan nations. One would think at first glance, God was being cruel to the foreign nation and unfair to his people in making them war against each other. In his infinite wisdom, he knew the pagan nations would impact his people and draw them away to follow after their pagan gods. However time after time as the picture unfolds, what we see is something totally different than what we expected. God always went before his people into battle and never left them to “fight” for their survival, on the contrary. The role of the people of God was to “mop up” after God himself defeated the foreign army. As a side note, the few times Israel was defeated in battle was either when “they decided” to fight an enemy without first consulting God, or their defeat was the will of God as punishment for their desire to follow after foreign Gods. The battle today belongs to the Lord. It is the same battle, and has always belonged to him. As we enter the streets of Port Huron this week we carry the flag of the Sovereign Lord of the Universe. He is the one and only God, and this battle is his as well. We represent him as light in a world of darkness. As righteousness in the face of evil. We gladly follow him into this battle with the song on our lips that he is the God of this city. This state. This nation. This world. Father we thank you for using us to glorify your name through our sweat and effort this week. We lift you up in our hearts and our lives to let the world know, “Our God Reigns!” Blessings.
